Vernon Dalhart, born in Texas, was a classically trained singer. When he made his way to New York he found little demand for the light opera he specialized in, and so he quickly adapted to minstrel songs. Dalhart is often cited as the first "country" singer: he argued that "negro" dialect and a southern accent were virtually identical .
