The son of a Spanish immigrant, Juan Carlos Cobián was a tango pianist, bandleader and composer from Argentina. After some minor successes in his home country, Cobián moved to the United States, where he formed an "Argentine Band" that played both jazz and tango. In 1928, Cobián returned to Argentina and went on to enjoy great success as a bandleader. Alongside such figures as Osvaldo Fresedo and Julio De Caro, Cobián was a member of the New Guard, a group of musicians and composers who sought to create a sophisticated version of the tango.
