About

Ignacio Corsini was one of the biggest singing stars in Argentina during the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Italy, Corsini arrived in Buenos Aires with his mother at the age of five. He spent much of his youth in a small town in the pampas, or grasslands of Argentina. He launched his career as a singer in the so-called criollo theatrical troupes that specialized in depicting the culture of the gauchos, or cowboys, of the pampas. He recorded first for Victor Records but later switched to Odeon, Victor's main competitor in Argentina. Like Carlos Gardel and Rosita Quiroga, he began as a specialist in folk songs of the countryside but later embraced the tango phenomenon. By the late 1920s, tango accounted for nearly three quarters of his recorded output, though he did still record folk tunes. Moreover, the folk label stuck to Corsini, who was known for imbuing even his tangos with a countrified style.
