George W. Johnson was an African American recording artist active from the 1890s-1910s. Born in Loudoun Country, Virginia in the 1840s, he moved North in the 1870s where he worked as a street performer before being asked to record because of his particularly booming voice and whistling abilities. His most famous recordings are “The Whistling Coon” and “The Laughing Song,” both of which he recorded many times for various labels. Johnson is notable for being the first major African American recording star.
